Our Academic Framework

Our Academic Framework

At the Montessori Academy of Virginia, every program is grounded in the traditional Montessori philosophy.

Our academic approach nurtures growth across all areas—intellectual, social, emotional, and physical—empowering students to reach their fullest aptitude. Through thoughtfully prepared environments and individualized instruction, we support exploration, discovery, and self-motivation. Our teachers personalize the curriculum to each child’s unique interests and talents, creating a daily “gifted” program.

Central to our success is a strong partnership between staff and students. Together, we form a cohesive educational team dedicated to helping every child thrive. Our academic program blends authentic Montessori methods with rich, interdisciplinary learning experiences that prepare students for lifelong success.

Enrichment Beyond the Core Curriculum

At Montessori Academy of Virginia, we believe that education extends beyond academics. Our comprehensive program integrates a wide variety of enriching activities that nurture their developmental stages.

S.T.E.M Exploration:

Students engage in exciting, hands-on science experiments that foster curiosity, inquiry, and a love of discovery. Our integrated STEM approach encourages problem-solving and critical thinking across disciplines.

MAV Farm School:

As part of our commitment to nature-based learning, PreK-K and above students participate in scheduled visits to our Montessori Acres Farm School. These immersive, rotating sessions provide direct engagement with:

  • Botany:Gardening, plant classification, and environmental stewardship.
  • Zoology:Observation, care, and understanding of animals and ecosystems.

Second Language Introduction:

We introduce a second language in early education to strengthen cognitive flexibility and expose children to the beauty of global communication. Instruction is age-appropriate, interactive, and culturally rich.

Gardening:

Through indoor and outdoor gardening, children connect with nature, learn about plant life cycles, and gain direct environmental stewardship.

Introduction to Computers:

Basic computer skills are introduced thoughtfully and age-appropriately to build digital literacy.

The Arts:

  • Music:Rhythm, melody, and movement are explored through singing and instrument play.
  • Creative Movement:Builds confidence and body awareness through expressive physical activity.
  • Art & Crafts:Encourages fine motor skills, creativity, and exploration of different media.
  • Culinary Activities:Students gain confidence and practical life skills through simple food preparation and cooking lessons.

Choir:

Children participate in seasonal choir performances, including festive Christmas and Spring concerts, promoting teamwork, discipline, and joy through music.

Cultural Studies:

We introduce students to diverse global cultures, traditions, and customs, fostering empathy, inclusion, and global awareness.

Physical Activity:

Children enjoy regular recess, gym activities to develop coordination, strength, flexibility and understand fair play.

What parents say about us
  • Our family has received incredible value from MAV. We’ve been with the school for 7 years and are amazed at how much our children have learned and grown under MAV’s care. The teachers and staff all care about the kids in a way that isn’t institutional. I highly recommend MAV for those looking to let their children safely explore life.
