A Day at MAV is Filled with Purpose, Discovery, and Wonder.
Every day at Montessori Academy of Virginia is enjoyably different because every child is different. However, there is a comfortable rhythm to the day; a time to learn, time to explore, time to work independently, time to be with peers, and time simply to be a child.
Our classrooms are attentively prepared environments, with materials and activities that invite students to explore, practice, create, and discover. Each classroom has its own group of students with their own teacher; every classroom has its unique personality and sense of community that is both inspiring and deeply connected.
The day begins with familiar, caring faces, a warm welcome and genuine connection.
Our vehicle drop-off is from 8:00–8:30 a.m., giving children a calm start to their morning. Teachers greet children as they arrive and help them settle into the classroom and begin their day.
Promptly at 8:30 a.m., children gather briefly as a classroom community before beginning their Montessori morning work cycle. Thereafter the classroom comes alive.
Children choose activities that interest them and work with materials aligned to develop academic progress and/or practice new skills. Some children work independently. Others work with a classmate or a small group. Teachers offer individual lesson presentations according to developmental readiness, introduce new materials, and step in when a child needs help.
There is no rush. Children have time to concentrate, work at their own individual pace, practice, make mistakes, try again, and feel proud when they achieve mastery.
In our mixed-age classrooms, children also learn from one another. Older children help younger classmates cultivating leadership, empathy, and respect, while younger children learn by watching and working alongside those who are more experienced.
After outdoor time, lunch and rest time children return to their classroom activities with renewed focus for more discovery.
They may continue work with their morning lessons, begin a new lesson, work with classmates, participate in a group activity, or explore a new interest. For some, the afternoon may bring about the mastery of skill they’ve been practicing in the morning.
One of the most wonderful things to watch at MAV is how children progress over time.
A child who once needed help putting on a jacket learns to do it independently. A child who was hesitant to speak begins sharing ideas with the group. A child who struggled with a new skill keeps trying until success is achieved. These may seem like small moments, but these are the moments that build confidence and self-esteem.
At 3:00 p.m., another school day comes to an end.
Children go home having learned something new, worked hard, played, explored, and spent time with people who know them well.
And tomorrow, they will return ready for a fresh day, because every day is another opportunity to grow, discover, and become who they are meant to be. Because childhood should be filled with wonder.
