At the Montessori Academy of Virginia, our age-based programs are grounded in the principles and practices of traditional Montessori education. Children work with carefully designed Montessori materials, receive individualized lesson presentations, and progress through the curriculum as they demonstrate readiness.
Our academic program spans language, literacy, mathematics, cultural studies, science, and the arts, with opportunities to make meaningful connections across subjects. Rather than moving every child through the same material at the same time, teachers observe each student closely and introduce new concepts when they are developmentally ready for the next step.
This individualized approach allows children to be appropriately challenged while giving them the time and space to develop a genuine understanding of discovery. Many families describe this practice as a daily “gifted” experience.
As students move on from MAV, families often tell us that they are well equipped to navigate the expectations of their next school environment. Our graduates transition to public and private schools with a strong understanding of how to approach new academic challenges and unfamiliar settings.
At MAV, there’s always something new to discover. Through enriching experiences on the farm, music, the arts, nature, STEM, and much more, children have the freedom and opportunities to explore new interests, build confidence, be creative, and discover what sparks their curiosity.

Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Elementary students participate in rotating scheduled visits to Montessori Acres for hands-on experiences with gardening, animals, and the natural world. Montessori Acres offers something a classroom alone cannot: the opportunity to experience the rhythms of nature and take part in caring for a living, changing place.

Through hands-on activities and experiments, children explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in engaging and meaningful ways. They ask questions, test ideas, investigate how things work, and find creative approaches to solving problems.

Children explore cultures, traditions, and customs from around the world. Through stories, celebrations, music, art, and other experiences, they gain a broader perspective of the world and an appreciation for the diverse ways people live and connect.

Through art, crafts, and culinary experiences, children have many opportunities to create and express themselves. Each experience invites them to explore different materials, ideas, and enjoyable forms of expression.

Depending on the season and the work at hand, children explore plant life, gardening, changing seasons, and botany through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Basic computer skills are introduced in developmentally appropriate ways, helping children build digital literacy, and responsible technology habits.

Music creative movement and seasonal choir performances, including festive Christmas and Spring concerts, gives children the opportunity to celebrate music, develop teamwork and create memorable experiences.

Children are introduced to a second language through engaging, age-appropriate experiences that build familiarity with another language and encourage an appreciation for different ways of communicating.

Children enjoy regular recess, gym activities to develop coordination, strength, flexibility and understand fair play.
To further support our families and enrich the student experience, MAV offers convenient, on-site extracurricular programs led by specialized instructors. These optional activities are offered outside of core academic hours and are available for an additional fee, paid directly to the activity provider.
These enhancement activities give children the opportunity to explore new interests, discover talents, and develop new skills within the familiar, welcoming environment of their school community.

To support the needs of working families, MAV offers convenient Before and After School Care for our enrolled students.
Our extended care program provides families with flexibility and peace of mind, offering care on an hourly basis at $10 per hour. This affordable option gives parents added convenience while allowing children to remain in the familiar and welcoming environment of their school.
Our goal is to provide a safe and seamless transition into extended care while parents have the flexibility they need, to balance work and family commitments.
