Dr. Maria Montessori placed profound importance on the study of Botany and Zoology, recognizing nature as an essential classroom and a cornerstone of meaningful learning. At the Montessori Academy of Virginia, this philosophy comes to life through Montessori Acres, our privately owned farm dedicated to experiential, nature-based education.
Montessori Acres offers a rich sensory environment and an extraordinary opportunity for students to engage directly with the natural world. Learning extends beyond the classroom into open green spaces, gardens, and animal habitats, where children are encouraged to explore, touch, smell, and observe—deepening their connection to nature and heightening their awareness of the world around them.
Under guided supervision, students’ groom, feed, exercise, and learn the daily needs of the animals. Through hands-on observation, exploration, and stewardship, children develop responsibility, empathy, and a deep respect for all living things. Our animals are well socialized and thoughtfully integrated into daily life on the farm, allowing students to participate confidently in meaningful care and interaction. In turn, the animals delight in the attention and care they receive, becoming valued partners in the learning process.
The classroom at Montessori Acres features a carefully curated collection of lessons aligned with the Montessori Botany and Zoology curricula. These experiences foster scientific inquiry, independence, and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world, rooted in authenticity, purpose, and joy.
Weather permitting, students visit Montessori Acres monthly, engaging in purposeful outdoor learning that extends and enriches the classroom experience. These educational outings are available to enrolled students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Elementary programs, offering meaningful opportunities for discovery across age levels.
A typical day at Montessori Acres may include preparing feed for the horses, collecting fresh eggs from the chicken coop, brushing the miniature horses, observing the golden pheasants, walking the donkeys, and exploring the inner workings of a functioning farmstead.
